Not officially my first cake, but still one of the first. This cake was for one of my girls, who just wanted to eat one of the eyes! I had to make several extras as she would poke at them. Finally at cake time she got to eat one. Carved from a 1/2 sheet pan and a few cupcakes, frosted with something probably from a package, and mixed colors from that cheap 4 pack of primary colors (but I was out of green...
What I learned: cake is crumbly, and red coloring takes time. Give in and use a piping bag!
Dora The Explorer, casualty of piping skills
So when the child in question is turning two...anything resembling the character is applauded. (of course at that age you could convince them that it was anything) Using your basic set of 4 food colors, I spent too much time getting pieces just wrong, and then attempted to pipe/spread the characters on the cake. Hmm... no practice makes...nada. Oh well, the toothpick drawn lines certainly helped a bit for placement, and the eyes turned out okay. One for the early history books. I'll call this one caveman drawings 1.0.
